Outdoor Entertaining
Sydney’s big on community, and it has to be, considering there are almost 400 people inhabiting each square kilometre of the city. That doesn’t leave us with a lot of room to move, but if you can make the most out of your outdoor spaces then it doesn’t matter how small they are.
When it comes to outdoor entertainment areas in small spaces, you really have to get creative with furniture and plants, because it just takes one misplaced deck chair or overgrown fern to make your courtyard look like a big mess. Here are some simple ways to spruce up your deck or patio to give it a new lease on life.
Get fragrant and floral
Climbers are extremely popular in small spaces due to their aesthetic appeal and ease of growth. Climbers such as star jasmine or stephanotis are ideal choices and both smell great, too. Place some lattice or get a space-saving trellis to train them on.
Say it with food
Entice guests into the backyard with the savoury scents of barbecued food. You can buy a small rustic brazier from your local hardware store and set it as a focal point in the backyard between two chairs (as seen above). Prepare a small feast or simply roast some marshmallows over the open flame.
Take a seat
It can sometimes be a little bit awkward to have a lot of chairs in your garden. Make the most out of the space by incorporating a bench with raised garden beds, creating a boundary. This also saves you the hassle of having to put away chairs after a party as you won’t need them in the first place.
Make it Tuscan, Moroccan … whatever it is, make it engaging.
If your outdoor entertainment area is surrounded with concrete walls, don’t let that dishearten you from creating a little slice of paradise. With a lick of paint, a couple of mosaic panels and some carefully placed terracotta wall pots, you can transform a drab boxed-in area into a Mediterranean getaway.
Green is the new black
If all else fails, go green with a veggie patch. It’s good for your outdoor areas and even better for your kitchen if you’ve got a bit of a green thumb. Start small – basil grows easily and in abundance, as do many other common herbs.
